This is mainly due to the fact that it is the default web browser on all Windows computers. Their dominance on the market is falling however, which is a result of growing competition, and that competition is better!

    Speed - Explorer is reasonably quick to load pages, however explorer uses a high ratio of memory for what it is doing, which can slow your computer down. Admittedly it is getting better with each new release, but consistently is left lagging behind the alternative web browsers.

    Security - Due to IE's popularity with users, there have been a lot of security breeches in the past. A simple web search will be able to show hundreds of stories about known vulnerabilities over the years, and it's not clear that Microsoft has resolved them all.

    Features - Explorer is fairly straight forward to use and Microsoft has seen that add-ons are becoming more popular with users and have started offering more features to include with newer versions of their browser. Explorer isn't however compatible with macs though.

    Summary - There are much better ways to surf the Internet, explorer is let down by persistent security issues. Despite this, it's dominance is still it's major strength. Web developers can test their snazzy new websites on all of the other web browsers, but if it doesn't work on IE, then it will be back to the drawing board.

    4. Safari

    Safari is Apple's default web browser which can be found on Macs, iPhones and iPads. It is also compatible with windows and Linux, so if your a fan you can download it and surf away on whatever computer you are on. It is currently the fourth most popular web browser, with it's popularity growing.

    Speed - Safari is super fast to load and doesn't use too much memory allowing you to quickly switch between programs and multi-task. It's built in progress bar allows you to see how fast it is actually running, which is a really useful addition.

    Security - Safari blocks viruses, spyware and pop-ups but lacks any protection against phishing schemes while browsing the Internet. This is a significant omission that may put people off. On a positive note, Safari makes it easy to remove personal information and browsing history, allowing you to surf with peace of mind.

    Features - The browser is very simple to use, especially on devices like the iPhone and iPad, but is slightly let down by the lack of customisability. The lack of parental controls is surprisingly not included, which may discourage some people.

    3. Opera

It's super fast at initial startup, super fast at loading and super fast at running apps. This browser has an inbuilt task manager, just like your desktop version, that allows you to see how much memory each individual website is using.

    Security - Google Chrome is very secure to use, allowing people to browse the web safely. It protects against viruses, spyware, pop-ups, phishing schemes and malware. Chrome will warn you when you are about to access an unsafe site.

    Features - There is a good set of features that can be incorporated to customise and make your experience much easier. Chrome makes it even easier to perform a web search for things by allowing the user to search directly in the address bar. Another very good feature is the ability to drag text or a link from anywhere on a page and put it directly in your web search bar, so no more need for copy and pasting!

  • Save Time With A Tabbed Browser When you work on the Internet, a tabbed browser is a very useful tool. Working with a tabbed browser will save time on mundane daily tasks and will help to ensure you don't overlook any regular tasks. Tabbed browsers also have the advantage of being completely free and you can download one from the Internet in seconds.

    Tabbed browsing allows you to open multiple web pages within a single browser window. Internet Explorer does not support tabbed browsing. Once you switch to a tabbed browser, you'll never go back to Internet Explorer.

    Firefox is generally accepted to be the best tabbed browser for surfing traffic exchanges as it protects you from practically all pop-ups. Crazy Browser is better for editing websites through certain control panels. Another useful feature of Firefox is that it is compatible with the Google toolbar.

    After you have downloaded a tabbed browser onto your computer, you can set up your groups.

    In Crazy Browser this is done as follows:

    1 Open a page ("tab") by clicking on the new page icon which is at the top left of the screen just under where it says "file". You can also use "Ctrl+N".

    2 Type or paste in the address of one of your programmes to get the site on screen. Don't log in yet, you want it at your log in page each time you open it.

    3 Click for another new tab and type or paste in another address.

    4 When you have opened as many tabs as you want (up to 8 is most manageable) click on "groups".

    5 In the drop down box click on the second choice - "Add all pages to a group".

    6 Click on the "new folder" icon and give a name to the new group.

    To add more sites to any particular group:

    1 you do the same steps up to and including 4.

    2 click on the first choice in the drop down menu, "Add to group" and select a group where you want to place the new site.

    Later, it is simple to move sites from one group to another, delete them, rename groups etc. To do this simply click on "Groups" and select "Organise groups".

    To Access Saved Groups you simply click on "Groups" then select the group you want to open from the drop down menu.

    In Firefox, the procedure is virtually identical:

    1 Open a new page by clicking "file" and then "new tab" from the drop down menu or by typing Ctrl+T.

    2 Type or paste in the address of one of your programmes to get the site on screen. Don't log in yet, you want it at your log in page each time you open it.

    3 Click for another new tab and do the same thing.

    5 Select "Bookmark all tabs" from the dropdown menu.

    Microsoft has included an enhanced version of ReadyBoost on Windows 7, a new feature that speeds up your computer even in a low memory situation by using flash memory, in its latest operating system Windows 7, scheduled to be launched on October 22.

    ReadyBoost, which also comes with Vista, make use of a USB flash drive or card as memory and it works with most of the flash storage devices.

    In Windows 7, it can handle more flash memory and even multiple devices up to eight, for a maximum 256GB of additional memory. When you plug a ReadyBoost-compatible storage device into your system, the AutoPlay dialog box offers you the option to speed up your computer using ReadyBoost. If you select this option, you can choose how much memory on the device to use for this purpose.

    When you set up a device to work with ReadyBoost, Windows shows you the space recommended for an optimal performance. For ReadyBoost to effectively speed up your computer, the flash drive or memory card should have at least 1GB of available space. If enough space is not available for ReadyBoost, you’ll see a message asking you to free some space on the device if you want to use it to speed up your system. You can enable or disable ReadyBoost for a specific flash drive or other removable storage device.

    Follow the given guidelines to enable this feature in Windows 7 .

    STEP1: Connect a flash drive or flash memory card into your computer.

    STEP2: Click Speed up my system, in the Autoplay dialog box, under General options.

    STEP3: In the Properties dialog box, click the ReadyBoost tab, and then do one of the following:

    To turn ReadyBoost off, click Do not use this device.

    To use the maximum available space on the flash drive or memory card for ReadyBoost, click Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Windows will leave any files already stored on the device, but it will use the rest to boost your system speed.

    To use less than the maximum available space on the device for ReadyBoost, click Use this device, and then move the slider to choose the amount of available space on the device you want to use.

    STEP4: Click OK.

  • Windows 7 to Get Security Patches on Tuesday Microsoft announced last Thursday at the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) that will release via Windows Update, 13 security patches next Tuesday (October 13). These patches will deal with 34 new vulnerabilities affecting Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, Silverlight, Forefront, development tools and SQL Server.

    This is nothing new, as the Redmond company publishes security bulletins on a monthly basis. However, what is different this time is that security bulletins this month include five security patches for Windows 7, one of which is considered "critical", while the others were rated "important." The critical update resolves a security hole in Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft stressed the importance of these changes as Jerry Bryant, security program manager, said:

    They usually do not come into this level of detail in the notice, but we felt it important guidance that clients can plan accordingly and deploy these updates as soon as possible.

    These are the first security patches Windows 7 is received after it has released to manufacturing. Windows XP and Vista seem to have more security problems because the former receive nine changes (in six of them are critical) and the second will have eight (five is the critics).
