  • Avant Browser An Internet Explorer Enhancer
The web is a vast and sprawling land, a place of sunlit clearings and shadowed recesses. With no path to guide us, any tool that promises to make the experience easier deserves a close look.

A few names stand out among the latest offerings in the world of free web browsers, including Opera and Slimbrowser, as well as the well-regarded Avant Browser. We took the latter for a test drive and came away with mixed feelings.

Not strictly a web browser by itself, Avant is instead a free, custom web browser application that sits on top of Internet Explorer, adding a wealth of features and functionality to the basic Microsoft offering. Some of its best features bring a new level of clarity and efficiency to the browsing experience.

A major selling point with Avant is its integrated utility for stopping pop-up ads. For those that haven't already installed a pop-up stopper (or that haven't installed Windows XP SP2, which packages a pop-up blocker with IE), this function is a must-have. Another useful feature is a built-in search engine that allows users to launch Yahoo! searches right off the task bar. The integrated Flash animation filter, which automatically heads off time-consuming animations before they begin, is yet another helpful feature in Avant Browser.

Other useful features in Avant that we'd be pleased to see eventually make their way into IE are the URL alias feature, which allows you to associate a short set of keystrokes for a URL (i.e. 'gg' for www.google.com or 'wp' for www.WinPlanet.com), and the record-clearing options, which make it quick and easy to delete traces of web browsing, including such items as your URL history, typed-in addresses, auto-complete passwords, cookies, temporary files, search keywords, and blocked pop-ups.

  • Orca Browser is to Firefox 3 what Avant Browser is to Internet Explorer Orca Browser is a web browser based on Firefox 3 which offers a bunch of features that you'd only get in Firefox by adding plugins and tweaking your browser settings. Orca is made by the same folks who develop the Avant Browser, which is based on Internet Explorer. So what does Orca offer that you won't find in the standard version of Firefox 3? First up, it's fast. Like ridiculously fast. Like, if you thought Firefox 3 rendered web pages more quickly than Firefox 2, you an't seen nothing yet fast. If that's not enough for you, there's also a service that lets you save your passwords, bookmarks, RSS feeds and other configuration settings online. That way you can sync your settings between Orca browsers installed on multiple machines.Orca is also extremely customizable. You can adjust the toolbars and other elements of the browser with just a few clicks. And Orca comes with about 20 skins preloaded, making it easy to change the color scheme. The only major problems we see is that Orca des not support Firefox 3 add-ons, and that the browser is Windows only.

  • Orca Browser is Avant for Firefox The free Orca Browser is a web browser based on the Firefox 3 core with the same speed and features of Firefox in addition to a handful of extra features. Those extra features include a built-in ad blocker, flash blocker, auto form-filler, and perhaps most useful, an online storage account that syncs your bookmarks, auto-form information, and more with an online account. Orca is made by the same folks who developed the freeware Avant Browser, which is based on Internet Explorer with an emphasis on speed and improved features.
Orca has a consolidated chrome to optimize screen real estate and comes boxed with several different themes. The biggest drawback I've noticed off the bat is that it doesn't seem to support Firefox extensions. (It appeared to be working when I tried installing some extensions, but still no luck after restarting.) If you're attracted to Firefox because of its extensibility, this is sort of a deal-breaker. On the other hand, if you use Firefox for the security and speed, don't want to install extensions yourself, but want more functionality, Orca may be worth a look. The Orca Browser is a freeware, Windows only. It's currently in alpha, but a more official release is slated for August.

  • Featured Freeware: Avant Browser There's a Web browser out there for everybody, and Avant should appeal to those users who like their customization in-house and built on an IE-rendering engine. Avant takes off in a different direction from Internet Explorer, though. It's IE if it were being produced by a small firm instead of Microsoft.
The browser is sufficiently zippy, preloaded with two dozen similar skins as well as tabbed browsing and modular toolbars. The Menu bar, though, is counterintuitively pinned to the upper-right corner, and icons for proprietary functions, such as an in-page search term highlighting toggle, aren't instantly comprehensible.
Avant can save personalized data online, making bookmarks and form content accessible from any machine. Avant includes many features that are available to Firefox users only through plug-ins, such as automatic form fillers. The Full Screen view auto hides all menu bars, a nice touch, but certain plug-ins--notably Flash--don't work on Windows Vista.
Avant is a good browser with some nice built-in features and interface-customization options, but the lack of extensibility and Vista problems don't help. We recommend it to XP users who want a Microsoft-based engine but think that Internet Explorer 7 is a pain.

  • Avant Browser 11.6 Build 17 Internet Explorer might come bundled with Windows but it lacks many features. A number of these can be found in Avant Browser.

Avant Browser is a quick download even for dial-up users. The interface is very similar to Internet Explorer, but open some of the menus and the differences are quickly obvious.

It is possible to deactivate different parts of a web page, such as pictures, sounds and flash animations. If you have a slow connection, this can make a huge difference.

Avant Browser can also block advertisements (including pop-ups), translate web pages, display web pages in full screen mode, and has full support for skins.

Any favorites or recently viewed pages from Internet Explorer can be easily imported, making migrating to this browser a doddle.

  • Control the Internet with Avant Browser Avant Browser is continuously improving its long list of characteristics. This browser includes many more options than the ones in Internet Explorer. Merely as an example, there are useful features, such as the possibility of automatically loading pre-set websites, or the integration of a download manager. Additionally, Avant Browser saves user profiles online, covering bookmarks and form automatic fill-in. No matter then where or which computer you are browsing with. Every data and user information will be at hand. And every change, either in your bookmarks or in your profile will be saved for further use.

With this application, internet browsing is made even more efficient. Tabs and direct Access to website control options are only a sample of those productivity features. Users can set up the refresh frequency of each tab. An RSS feeds and a powerful bookmarks manager are also integrated in this excellent browser.
Not only is Avant Browser such a useful and powerful browser, it is also specially designed for granting user’s privacy. With only one click, all the browsing session information can be deleted, pop ups can be locked, bookmarks can be activated or deactivated, or even, a website or part of it can be converted into a picture file. Even the forms auto fill-in feature is able to preserve the privacy: all the personal information is encoded.

To conclude, Avant Browser is a browser ahead of its time and ahead of the Internet itself. For the time being, and waiting for the overall adoption of IE 7 and Opera or Firefox, it is probably the most advanced available browser.

  • Avant Browser 10 with tiny toolbar

I finally sat down to find a solution to a problem that been bothering me for a while now. Sometimes I see a URL in a web site (this mostly happens in forums or blogs), which is not a link, so if you want to see it, you must copy and paste it.

Avant Browser version 10 came with a little toolbar that sometimes show near your selection, but this toolbar is not predictable - I couldn’t figure out when exactly Avant decides to show it, and it only has a Search button. Normally, when Google is searched for a URL, this URL is opened, but I don’t want to count on this.

So, what I did is creating a file in d:\winnt\web named OpenThisURL.html, with the following content:

And I also added a new registry key to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt named “Open This &URL” with default value set to d:\WINNT\Web\OpenThisURL.html. I also added a binary value named Contexts, with its value set to “10 00 00″. Now, after restarting the browser, selecting the URL text, and right-clicking adds an “Open This URL” menu item, which opens it in another window.

This even works well in Avant Browser.

  • Avant Browser + Firefox = Dr. Orca

Anderson, the creator of the popular IE based browser, Avant browser which according to Download.com downloaded over 11 millions times, is gearing to release the next browser project named Dr. Orca.

Dr. Orca is an Avant browser version based on Firefox 1.5 beta. The beta 1 version of Dr. Orca released few weeks ago is available for download.

At first look Dr. Orca looks just like Avant browser and Avant browser users will feel right at home, with the same look and feel, same features, menus and toolbars. But under the hood, the rendering engine is purely Firefox.

In the current beta you can not install any of Firefox’s plug-ins but it comes with Google and Yahoo toolbars already installed (although you’ll need to enable Google’s toolbar like in Avant browser, since Yahoo is the default search toolbar).

Dr. Orca is still in early beta and it has some bugs and missing some features available in Avant, but it is sure looks like a promising development and good news to the Avant browser lovers.
